Forensic Scientist Charts a New Path in Mississippi
Born with ocular albinism, a genetic eye condition causing vision impairment, Joyanna faced challenges from an early age. Determined to build a successful future, she set her goal to become a forensic scientist – inspired by the TV character Abby from NCIS.
With support from the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services’ Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind program, Joyanna attended Mississippi State University, earning a biochemistry degree with a concentration in forensics. MDRS provided tuition assistance, housing, and specialized glasses enabling her to drive.
Now a forensic chemist trainee at the Columbus Police Department crime lab, Joyanna earned the praise of Chief Joseph M. Daughtry, Sr. for her determination, qualifications, and trailblazing spirit.
Her counselors and family credit her success to her drive and MDRS’ resources. “I am so grateful,” Joyanna said. “I wouldn’t be where I am without MDRS. They believed in me and gave me the tools to achieve my dreams.”
